Cousins! A school district located in North Carolina is currently requesting a total of 225 teachers to pay back $1,250 each after issuing a claimed accidental bonus payout.
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS) has forwarded an apology to teachers regarding the January 12th bonuses, reports Fox News. It has been confirmed that the bonuses were a payroll error that was noticed five days later on January 17th.
According to PEOPLE, a total of $281,250 was mistakenly paid out.
The error has been described as, “an unfortunate oversight.”
In an extended email issued on January 18th, CMS advised teachers that they whave two available options for repayment.
Officials declare that employees are allowed to pay in a lump sum from their February check or select a payment plan with deductions spanning over three months.
“We understand the challenges this error may have caused, and we are committed to working closely with each of the teachers impacted,” CMS stated.
“We value the work of all CMS employees and sincerely apologize for any distress or inconvenience. If employees have any questions related to this situation, they may contact the CMS Human Resources Division.”
It has been stated that the issued bonuses were intended for new teachers as an incentive due to a critical shortage.
“The teachers affected are not new to their area and should not have received the bonus,” reports Fox News.
“These teachers do receive a separate “retention” bonus for serving in critical shortage areas in the amount of $200 a month,”
CMS has a total of 184 schools throughout Mecklenburg County and employs over 20,000 teachers, supportive staff members, and administrators, along with 141,000 students ranging from kindergarten through 12th grade, reads a page on the CMS website.
