According to reports from Deadline, the 81-year-old passed away on Tuesday October 24th, following a brief battle with pancreatic cancer. TMZ reports that Richard’s manager informed them that he had been diagnosed two months ago.
It has been stated that Richard was surrounded by his loved ones at the time of his passing.
Richard will forever be remembered for his extensive legacy in film and television with an extensive career that has expanded over the last five decades.
Richard is best known for his role in the cult classic m0vie franchise ‘Shaft’ debuting in 1973. Following his legendary performance Richard was named the first Black action hero of Hollywood. He went on to gain two New Star of the year nominations at the Golden Globe Awards.
Fellow actor Gabrielle Union-Wade took to social media to pay her respect to Richard’s legacy as she reflects on working beside him in the drama series ‘Being Mary Jane’
“Working with Richard Roundtree was a dream. Getting to hang with him & our Being Mary Jane family was always a good ass time with the best stories & laughs,” tweeted Gabrielle.
“He was ALWAYS the coolest man in the room with the BEST vibes & ppl would literally run over to come see him. He was simply the best & we all loved him.
