Greys Anatomy leading lady Ellen Pompeo is ready for her role of Meredith Grey to hang her gloves and lab coat up for good!
In a recently released interview with Insider, Ellen admitted that she’s wanted the show to end a while ago. “I’ve been trying to focus on convincing everybody that it should end. I feel like I’m the super naive one who keeps saying, ‘But what’s the story going to be, what story are we going to tell?’ “
Ellen says despite her hinting at ending the show for the longest, she is usually met with the response of, “Who cares, Ellen? It makes a gazillion dollars..”
According to People Magazine this isn’t the first time Ellen signaled at the show approaching its expiration date while admitting she’s been trying to exit for years.
“It’s not because I haven’t been trying,” she explains. “I have strong-relationships at the network [ABC] and they have been very, very good to me, and have incentivized me to stay.”
Sources have confirmed that Ellen isn’t the only one who believes the show should have been wrapped. Earlier this year Grey’s Anatomy creator Shonda Rhimes revealed that she has created multiple endings for the series numerous times.
“I’ve written the end of that series, I want to say, a good eight times,” Rhimes, 51, said in an interview with Variety. “I was like, ‘And that will be the end!’ Or, ‘That’ll be the final thing that’s ever said or done!’ And all of those things have already happened. So I give up on that, you know what I mean?”
Though she brought the medical drama to the ABC network in 2005, Krista Vernoff took over as show runner a few years ago back in 2017.
“I’ve written the end of that series, I want to say, a good eight times,” Rhimes, 51, told Variety. “I was like, ‘And that will be the end!’ Or, ‘That’ll be the final thing that’s ever said or done!’ And all of those things have already happened. So I give up on that, you know what I mean?”
The beloved series is currently airing season 18 every Thursday night at 9PM EST on ABC.
