Baton Rouge City Council has officially voted to forward a $4.5 million dollar settlement to the family of police brutality victim Alton Sterling!
Alton, 37 was shot and killed in 2016 at the hands of Baton Rouge police officials for selling cds at a local gas station. The horrific incident went viral following circulated recordings posted to social media by numerous witnesses.
According to ABC News a settlement was reached in Alton’s family wrongful death suit against the city of Baton Rouge and the police department with a vote of 7-4.
The news was announced Wednesday afternoon as Baton Rouge Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome tweeted, “I am pleased our metro council was able to find a consensus and approve an offer of settlement in the Alton Sterling civil case.”
”After nearly five years, the people of Baton Rouge are finally one step closer to getting much needed closure in this traumatic episode in our history.”
Reports read that the governing council had denied the family’s original $5 million dollar settlement proposal back in 2020. Sources have confirmed that ruling fell short of one vote needed for approval.
