The Supreme Court has officially issued a much awaited law that will not only protect the LGBTQ community within the work place but also bans firing based on discrimination against them!
According to NBC News, the Supreme Court announced the big news on Monday stating that existing federal law will now forbid job discrimination based on sexual orientation or transgender status. Sources have confirmed that this is a major achievement for the LGBTQ community, upon years of fighting for the transgender equal rights movement.
Reports read that with a vote of 6-3 the Supreme Court ruled to make it illegal for employers to discriminate against any individual based on sex, orientation and transgender status. Official court documents noted that sexual orientation discrimination is also a direct form of sex discrimination.
Supreme Court appointee, Neil Gorsuch says within a forwarded statement, “An employer who fired an individual for being homosexual or transgender fires that person for traits or actions it would not have questioned in members of a different sex.”
”Sex plays a necessary and undisguisable role in the decision, exactly what Title VII forbids. Those who adopted the Civil Rights Act might not have anticipated their work would lead to this particular result.”
He continues, “But the limits of the drafters’ imagination supply no reason to ignore the law’s demands. Only the written word is the law, and all persons are entitled to its benefit.”
