Though it is very apparent as well as disheartening that we will not be receiving the official Harriet Tubman twenty dollar bill anytime soon; One United Bank has decided to take matters into their own hands and issue a debit card to make up for societies short comings. Or so they though at least..
In honor of #BlackHistoryMonth , One United Bank regarded as one of the largest Black owned banks in the country reports CBS NEWS; decided to forward efforts of respect to the historic leader by issuing a debit card with a image of her on it.
“Bury me in the ocean, with my ancestors that jumped from the ships, because they knew death was better than Harriet Tubman hitting the Wakanda salute on debit cards.” https://t.co/ovOLNtSrlM

it's amazing how differently the idea of harriet tubman on u.s. legal tender feels than putting her face on a debit card. https://t.co/y7Y5wtmsPX

Phew. I’ll only say this once…
Wakanda is a fictional country.
So there is really nothing like a Wakanda salute🙅🏾♀️irl.
Therefore, there is no way the legendary Harriet Tubman would have been making a “Wakanda salute” 170 years ago.Real life is not a Hollywood movie. 🤦🏾♀️ https://t.co/K5lRNt3ucv

Unfortunatley the bank’s efforts were deemed humorous on one side of the spectrum and damaging on the other. As multiple social media users took to platforms of twitter to voice their opinions of the image used.
I’m getting this card and all of my future transactions will go down like this:
“And how will you be paying for this, ma’am?”
“It depends. Wakanda payment methods do you accept?”

The New York Times reports that the bank’s President and operating Chief Officer Teri Williams has addressed the issue in a forwarded statement, “A This symbol of Black empowerment in 2020 will pave the way for the Harriet Tubman design on the $20 bill.”
She goes on to state, “Harriet Tubman is the ultimate symbol of love — love that causes you to sacrifice everything, including your own life.”
DO YOU THINK HARRIET TUBMAN WAS WALKING AROUND SALUTING WAKANDA WHILE SHE WAS TAKING SLAVES???? TO FREEDOM? https://t.co/1yhWavQy0m

Um. Why is Harriet Tubman doing “Wakanda forever” on a credit card?
