As we previously reported the October 14th incident took place in the middle of the night as Atatiana baby sat her young nephew at home. It has been stated that Police officials were contacted after a worried neighbor had called indicating that a door was of Atatiana’s home was left partially open.

She was never notified that officials would be coming to her home so when Atatiana saw flashing lights late at night she went to the window to see what was the cause. The Pre-Med Graduate student was shot and killed from piercing bullets shattering through the back window of her home by Officer Dean.

According to NBC News; Atatiana’s family attorney tweeted that though they’re relieved they will,  “remain cautious that a conviction and appropriate sentence is still a long way away.”

Sources have confirmed that within a week after Atatiana’s death a rare murder charge was placed against Dean. It has also been stated that Dean resigned just before being arrested within that same week.

Prosecutors have stated that there is enough substantial information to indite Dean and that this case will be handled within the full extent of the law.

“Had the officer not resigned, I would have fired him for violations for several policies, including our use of force policy, our de-escalation policy and unprofessional conduct,” states Police Chief Ed Kraus to local reporters.
