An Air Canada Express flight collided with a fire-rescue vehicle on the runway at #LaGuardia Airport late Sunday night, killing both the pilot and co-pilot.

According to CBS News, more than 40 passengers were injured alongside crew members who were all rushed to the hospital. Several remain hospitalized at this time while, the bodies of the two pilots, Antoine Forest and Mackenzie Gunther, were returned to Canada on Thursday.

Sources say the plane was landing from Montreal when a fire truck was cleared to cross the runway, a last-second attempt to stop it couldn’t prevent disaster. The front of the plane took the brunt of the crash.

Audio of the air traffic controller has surfaced, capturing him telling the emergency vehicle repeatedly to “stop, stop, stop” just moments after it was given permission to cross the runway.

In response to the tragic and fatal turn of events, LaGuardia airport had been temporarily shut down with talks of expanding closure time. As of now Federal investigators are on-site trying to figure out how this could happen.
