Drake ain’t letting up yet—— dropping off new claims in a hefty defamation lawsuit against Universal Music Group (UMG), saying his name was dragged through the mud after this year’s Grammys and Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl halftime show, all while over 100 million fans were tapped in and streaming Not Like Us!
The 6 God filed a newly expanded federal defamation suit against his own record label of UMG, on Wednesday (April 16th) reports CNN. Kendrick’s name was not mentioned in the newly amended suit, despite issuing details on how his halftime show pulled in record-breaking viewership further. “Millions of children who had never before heard the song or any of the songs that preceded it,” reads the issued suit.
“It was the first, and hopefully be the last, Super Bowl halftime show orchestrated to assasinate the character of another artist.”
“These prestigious and high-exposure events introduced new listeners,” wrote Drake’s attorney in the latest court filing. “Not only did streams of the Recording increase significantly following these two mega-cultural events, but threats against Drake and his family did as well.”
The amended suit also highlights that the Compton rapper censored the word ‘pedophile’ while performing ‘Not Like Us’, as evidence of Drake’s defamation claims.
As for Kendrick’s historic win at this year’s Grammys, Drake states that UMG strategically had ‘Not Like Us” played during the telecast to an audience of over ten million viewers which he believes took place under the label’s consent.
UMG has since fired back at Drake’s recent filing, claiming that Drake is being misled by his legal team and demanding his suit be dismissed.
“Drake, unquestionably one of the world’s most accomplished artists and with whom we’ve enjoyed a 16-year successful relationship, is being misled by his legal representatives into taking one absurd legal step after another,” wrote UMG in a statement to CNN on Thursday ( April 17th).
As we previously reported, Drake took legal action at the top of the year back in January as he called out UMG on allegations of using bots to artificially increase streaming data for the viral rap beef on Kendrick’s behalf.
