According to reports from CNN, the Trump administration has officially begun drawing out an executive order to begin the process of eliminating the Department of Education!
Sources state that the move would be initiated into two parts, as the order would be directed to the Secretary of Education through an executive action. Trump would then have to push for Congress to make the final decision and pass a legislative order to eliminate the Department of Education.
Despite Trump’s campaign promises to do away with the department it is important to know that his order is required to be approved by Congress.
Though this isn’t the first time an official has called for the elimination of the Department of Education or a possible merger, it has been stated that Congress has historically declined to support such notions.
Oddly enough the 78 year says that he wants his secretary of education pick Linda McMahon to “put herself out of a job.”
“I told Linda, ‘Linda, I hope you do a great job in putting yourself out of a job.’ I want her to put herself out of a job – Education Department,” said Trump.
Linda has been recognized as the head of the Small Business Administration during Trump’s first term. At this time, she has not yet received a confirmation hearing to solidify her position as Secretary of Education.
If Trump’s plans were to succeed in ending the Department of Education, it has been noted that there is a large chance that some programs and funding could be retained and shifted to alternate agencies.
Dozens of Education Department employees were placed on paid administrative leave earlier this month as part of the Trump administration’s efforts to dismantle the federal work force associated with with diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility efforts, reports CNN.
