Noir Nation, it is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of music producer and Murder Inc co-Founder Irv Gotti!
News of Irv’s death was confirmed Wednesday evening February 5th by the The Hollywood Reporter.
“The founder of Murder Inc. Records, has died, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed. The cause of death is as yet unknown,” reports THR.
“The cause of death has not been announced, but the music mogul did suffer a number of strokes in recent years and had also battled diabetes-related issues.”
Born Irving Domingo Lorenzo Jr, his career in the music industry began within the late 1990’s and early 2000’s. While working as an A&R at Def Jam records, Irv helped push forth talents such as DMX and Jay-Z to the label.
“Def Jam has lost one of its most creative soldiers who was hip-hop,” reads a statement from Lyor Cohen, who previously worked as chief executive roles at Def Jam from 1988 to 2004.
“When we were on bended knee, he brought the heat and saved our asses. He comes from a very tight beautiful family from Queens and it’s an honor and a privilege to have known him. Irv, you will be missed.”
Irv furthered his career alongside his brother Chris Lorenzo as they came together to co-found Murder Inc.
While being considered the mastermind behind the Murder Inc. empire, Irv is has been recognized for launching the careers of Ashanti, Lloyd, Vita, Charli Baltimore and many more.
By perfectly blending melodies paired with Hip-Hop beats, Irv is considered a music genius and pioneer for introducing a crossover between R&B and rap, instantly creating a new wave of music in the early 2000’s era.
Throughout his career Irv has produced songs for chart topping artists such as Kanye West, Fat Joe, Christina Millian and Memphis Bleek.
Irv is survived by his three children Angie, Sonny and Jonathan Wilson, his mother Nee Nee Lorenzo, his sisters Tina and Angie as well as his brother Chris.
