Noir Nation, grab your books and your pencils and let’s go for the revolution has officially been digitized!
What initially started off as a jokey-joke has now evolved into a movement as Black scholars from all over the country have taken to Tiktok to create an educational and cultural space dedicated to learning.
According to Black Enterprise the now viral trend kicked off after African American studies professor Dr Barlow decided to utilize TikTok as a way to interact with her students through social media.
Reports read she began by offering her syllabus online, including reading materials and course expectations for the semester.
It has been indicated that online users didn’t know that the content was exclusively designed for her students. However, Dr Barlow’s content began to blow up online, with fellow educators jumping on the trend allowing social media users to tap in.
Hillman Tok not only celebrates the fictional university of the iconic series ‘A Different World but also provides a fun and interactive spin on education.
According to reports from Blavity, Hillman Tok currently consists of well over 3,200 posts and 400 courses of content with class initially kicking off on January 26. From educational intelligence, mental health, wealth/ tax courses, academic advisement and more; Hillman Tok has it ALL.
Another TikTok user has gone viral after sharing a detailed explanation of how Dr. Barlow’s original video created a pattern of other educators to lend their knowledge. Declaring that the support originates from the 92% of Black women who voted for former VP Kamala Harris. The Black community has seemingly joined forces to shift their focus on togetherness instead of Trump’s presidency.
“Here’s how it goes, Trump becomes president, the 92% say they are minding their own business.”
“Dr. Barlow posts a video about African American studies and it’s just for her students. Because we’re starved for community and when Black women tell us to do something we listen, we all ‘enrolled.”
Sources state an official link with a directory of the courses has also been shared including start dates for their Spring 2025 semester.
Be sure to search ‘HillmanTok’ on TikTok and we’ll see you in class!
