Noit Nation, a new law is set to take place within the state of New York that’ll allow expecting mothers paid time off to attend doctor appointments in order to receive prenatal care!
The official announcement was made on Monday, December 2nd as Governor Kathy Hotchul reflected on prenatal leave policies. According to WGRZ-2 News, the new law will serve as the nation’s first-ever paid prenatal leave policy.
Under the issued legislation, all private employers within the state of New York will be required to approve expecting mothers up to twenty hours of paid prenatal leave beginning on January 1st, 2025.
“No pregnant woman should have to choose between a paycheck and a checkup,” wrote Gov. Hochul on Twitter (X). “On January 1, New York will become the first state in the nation to give pregnant women paid time off for prenatal appointments.”
She adds, ““From raising the minimum wage to investing in affordable child care, we’re making New York the best and most affordable place to raise a family.”
Reports read that The New York State Department of Labor estimates that approximately 130,000 pregnant women per year will be eligible for the newly declared benefits.
According to the New York Gov official website, pregnancy-related health care benefits will provide paid time off for:
- Physical examinations
- Medical procedures
- Monitoring
- Testing
- Discussions with a health care provider needed to ensure a healthy pregnancy
- Fertility treatment
- End of pregnancy care
