Cousins! A Florida family has been left with heavy hearts as they continue to search for answers in connection to the tragic death of a woman following a medical procedure conducted by a surgical robot!
According to court documents obtained by TMZ, Boca Raton native Sandra Sultzer passed away in 2022 after undergoing a procedure in hopes of treating her colon cancer diagnosis.
It has been stated that the surgery was performed at Baptist Health Boca Raton Regional Hospital, by a four-armed machine identified as a ‘da Vinci’ robot. The machine is activated by a doctor who operates a camera and also steers the robot’s arms by using a joystick along with foot pedals.
Reports read that the procedure also included the use of electrosurgical instruments known as “EndoWrist” which are utilized to duplicate a surgeon’s hand movement in real-time.
Sources state that the February 6th filed suit has forwarded claims that Sandra suffered from multiple health issues following the surgery conducted by “da Vinci”.
Documents detail that Sandra received an injury to her small intestine, which caused her to undergo further medical procedures to assist in correcting the matter. The suit alleges that Sandra’s condition turned for the worse and she ultimately succumbed to her injuries in February of 2022.
The suit reads that neither Sandra nor her family were advised of the potential risks at hand prior to the conducted surgery or the use of the associated instruments. It has been alleged that the ‘da Vinchi’ robot has higher complication rates in comparison to traditional surgery instruments.
Along with the recently issued suit, ISI is currently facing a total of 93 product liability lawsuits. The suits allege that patients have either sustained health complications following a conducted procedure or fatal injuries.
ISI is being sued for $75,000 in damages, including charges of negligence, product liability, design defect, failure to warn, loss of consortium, and punitive damages.
Despite the heightened fascination of technology, the issued suit brings forth awareness, transparency, and accountability, regarding the use of surgical robots.
