Cousins! Ex-Minneapolis officer Derek Chauvin made headlines this week following reports that he was stabbed while in a Federal prison located in Arizona!

According to reports from CNN, the incident occurred on Friday, November 24th. Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison confirmed the assault while announcing that Derek is currently in stable condition.

“I am sad to hear that Derek Chauvin was the target of violence,” said Keith in an issued statement to CNN. “He was duly convicted of his crimes and, like any incarcerated individual, he should be able to serve his sentence without fear of retaliation or violence.”

Derek is currently serving two listed concurrent sentences at the medium-security prison following the inhumane 2020 murder of George Floyd. According to CNN, he was convicted in April 2021, for state charges of second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter.

Derek was originally sentenced to 22 and half years behind bars. Following his initial sentencing, Derek is said to have pleaded guilty to federal charges upon depriving Floyd of his civil rights. He was ultimately sentenced to 21 years in prison.

Reports of Derek’s stabbing were originally issued by the Bureau of Prisons on Friday, per the Associated Press.

“An incarcerated individual was assaulted at the Federal Correctional Institution in Tucson at approximately 12:30 p.m,” reads a statement from the Bureau of Prisons

“Responding employees initiated life-saving measures for one incarcerated individual,” and that person was transferred to a hospital for treatment, the bureau said in a release. “No employees were injured during the incident.”

Federal Bureau of Prisons spokesperson Emery Nelson has stated that as of Saturday, November 25th, visitation for the entire prison has been suspended until further notice.

When asked if visitations were suspended due to the attack on Derek he responded by saying, “For safety and security reasons, the details supporting a warden’s decision to suspend visitation at their facility are not discussed.”

Derek’s attorney Greg Erickson, says that he became aware of his client’s stabbing through the media. He says despite numerous attempts to contact the facility he has been unable to reach prison officials.

“I’ve called the prison seven times. They’ve refused to speak to me seven times,” Greg said to CNN within a shared pool interview.

Greg declares that Derek’s parents have also been unable to reach him. “It’s unbelievably unprofessional that no one from the prison has reached out to his parents.”

He says that due to the circumstances of Derek’s conviction he has an undeniable target on his back “There’s a huge portion of the inmate population that wants to make a name for themselves by killing him.”

CNN reports that the US Supreme Court rejected an appeal from Derek earlier this week upon his state conviction after he argued that he didn’t receive a fair trial.
