Cousins! It’s been over 20 plus years since the beloved dramedy of ‘Bring It On’ debut in theaters, however the overall influence of the early 2000’s film is forever present. From the costumes and conversations surrounding culture appropriation; the cult classic project was surely ahead of it’s time.
In recent conversation with Gabrielle Union who secured the signature role of Isis in ‘Bring It On’ as team captain of a rival team—she confirms that she is currently working on bringing a sequel to the big screens.
“We’ve been developing a sequel that centers on the Clovers,” says Gabrielle. The East Compton Clovers is the squad she cheered for in the original film.We are working on it.”
“But for folks who don’t exactly understand how long development can take in Hollywood, that could be five minutes or 50 years,”she told Variety.
Earlier this summer as the film celebrated its 22 year debut anniversary Gabrielle sparked major conversation following a tweet that read “Hmmm, so Isis might have a teenager.”
Fellow celebrities such as Ryan Destiny, Chloe Bailey and more immediately chimed in with excitement and sharing their wants to be apart of the possibility of a follow up film.
“i wanna be apart 🥺😍,” wrote Chloe.
“yup. where are the uniforms?!” tweeted Ryan.
Acording to Entertainment Tonight Gabrielle said that just one month after the viral tweet she had began to hear back from different writers. “..hearing some really great takes from some big-name writers.”
“Imagine if her daughter was, you know, a high stepper from Jackson State, Hawthorne State or Hampton. There’s so many forms of cheerleading that we don’t get to celebrate,” Gabrielle previously stated. “The possibilities are endless.”
More recently she says that Isis doesn’t necessarily have to have a daughter. “I mean, I could have a son, a daughter. I could have a non-binary child. Anything’s possible,” she joked within comparison to her real life, “I’m already Mama June on the sidelines.”
‘Bring it On’ is described as a comedy-sport’s film telling the story of a group of high school cheerleaders that have their worlds rocked once faced an unexpected reality. In regards to their sixth year in a row win at a National competition they are directly informed that it won’t be an easy grab. This hard truth comes after being confronted that their believed signature routine wasn’t original at all but in fact stolen.
The film originally hit theaters August 22nd, 2000 starring actors Kristen Dunst, Eliza Dushku, Jesse Bradford, Gabrielle and the ladies of beloved R&B group Blaque. With a budget of $10 million dollars the film went on to successfully pull in $90 million dollars in box office sales.
