A senior citizen male has recently been awarded $100 million dollars after he fell and broke his neck in the end result of being shocked with a stun gun during a reported foot chase by local police officers!
According to USA news Jerry Blasingame , 65 had been asking drivers for money at the time of the incident on July. 10th 2018. Now at 69 year old he has been confirmed as being paralyzed from his neck down.
In official court proceedings jurors found that officer Jon Grubbs used unreasonable force against Jerry. They state that the Atlanta Police Department should forward $60 million dollars along with officer Grubbs paying $40 million to the victim.
“The record would allow the jury to find that Mr. Blasingame had not been committing a serious crime before he was tased/ that Officer Grubbs did not fear for his safety/ and that the exigent circumstances were not otherwise so severe as to permit Officer Grubbs’s use of force,” said Judge Steven Jones.
Reports that Jerry’s conservator, identified as Keith Edwards sued the city of Atlanta as well as Officer Grubs following the incident for the cost of both past and future medical bills.
It has been stated that due to his current condition Jerry needs around the clock care costing $ 1 million dollars a year and that her has racked up a total of $14 million dollars in medical care bills.
The proceeding judge alongside civil rights attorney Craig Jones note that officer Grubbs violated department policy in using a stun gun on an elderly male who was running away.
Edwards’ lawsuit reads that: Blasingame was on the street and asking people for money when Grubbs and another officer arrived and saw him talking with a driver.
Grubbs stepped out of the patrol car and told Blasingame to stop, but he moved out of the street to a guard rail, and Grubbs ran toward him, according to the lawsuit.
“Grubbs gets out of the car and starts chasing my client — a 65-year-old man — and for what? For potentially asking people for money?” said Johnson.
In the continued statement Johnson accuses the city of not completing a thorough investigation into Grubbs’ conduct and allowing him to return to his full duty position just six months after the incident prior to the conclusion of the investigation.
“This is how an officer gets away with excessive force,” Johnson stated to the jury in his closing argument. “You bury it.”
