In a new episode of our ‘Kicking It One on One’ series we had the pleasure of speaking with William to discuss his new fan favorite role in a newly released series that is sincerely shaking up the industry.
‘Abbott Elementary’ created by the immensely talented Quinta Brunson, is a mockumentary styled comedy series starring a group of passionate faculty members working within the Philadelphia school system. Despite the lack of assistance they receive, together each member utilizes their passion to insure each student succeeds in learning.
William plays the role of the Abbott Elementary’s hilarious, witty, kind hearted and swagged out janitor Mr. Johnson. Originally appearing as a recurring character in seasons one, Mr. Johnson succeed in winning over the hearts of millions through relatable humor and significancy.

When asked how does he relate to the role of Mr. Johnson, William proceeded in sharing that he remembers his own school experiences and how there was a specific faculty member that went the extra mile to care for each student.
Abott Elementary is highly praised for shining a light on issues both students and faculty members often face in terms of necessary classroom supplies, text books and general funding.
“ In Black and Latino areas, schools are defunded. Even when I was a young man there were books with tape on them that had already been used.”
William spoke on the essence of the storylines behind Abbott in saying that, “..a couple things about the show is, it details how underfunded schools are and how teachers need to be paid.”
William continues in reflecting on how 1/3 of a child’s day is spent with their teacher who takes on the responsibility to not only teach them but also care for their entire existence. “That’s an important role.”
Starring Quinta Brunson, Tyler James Williams, Janelle James, Lisa Ann Walter, Chris Perfetti, Sheryl Lee Ralph and William, ‘Abbott Elementary’ has earned a total of 7 Emmy nominations. They also recently took home four HCA’s including Best Broadcast Network Series, Comedy, Best Writing in a Broadcast Network or Cable Series, Comedy, as well as Best Actress in a Broadcast Network or Cable Series, Comedy and Best Supporting Actress in a Broadcast Network or Cable Series for series cast members Quinta and Janelle.
We are also pleased to announce that over the summer, exacting news was released that for the very first time in his 27 year long career William has landed a series regular role.
“ I am very happy. I am doing something that I love and have been blessed in so many ways,” says William.
