Grammy award winning international artist Shakira has found herself on the deep end of an ongoing tax fraud case with Spain prosecutors after rejecting a plea deal!

According to Fox News, Shakira was initially offered a settlement but rejected and opted to take the case to trial. Prosecutors then responded in seeking 8 years in prison along with a $24 million (euros) fine on her behalf.

Reports read that she is currently facing a total of six charges, deriving from failure to pay the Spanish government 14.5 million euros ($15 million) in taxes between 2012 and 2014.

Shakira is said to have spent more than half of both 2012 as well as 2014 in Spain, and is required to pay taxes in the country.

A spokesperson for Shakira has come forward in saying, “Shakira has always cooperated and abided by the law, demonstrating impeccable conduct as an individual and a taxpayer, and faithfully following the counsel of PriceWaterhouse Coopers, a prestigious and globally recognized tax firm.”

The statement continues, “unfortunately, the Spanish Tax Office, which loses one out of every two lawsuits with its taxpayers, continues to violate her rights and pursue yet another baseless case. Shakira is confident that her innocence will be proven by the end of the judicial process.”

Earlier this year back within the month of May, In May, Shakira is said to have appealed the same tax fraud charges, but a court blocked her request.
