Vegan foodie and actress Tabitha Brown is making it clear of what she’d like to see for her people in the near future, as she advocates for the Black Community to free themselves from code switching!

“I really would like to see code switching disappear,”says Tabitha in an interview with The Grio. “I was a person who code switched for the majority of my life, covered my accent or tried to fit in and be a certain way to be accepted, but that’s not freedom.”

Tabitha urges Black people to break from the chains of code switching, as she explains that it’s not what true freedom should be.

Throughout the last couple of years we’ve all witnessed Tabitha’s fame and following increase naturally because people are drawn to her gentle affirmations, authenticity, and warm smile. With an Instagram audience of 4.1 million followers, she encourages people to embrace themselves by accepting their roots and families for who they are in and outside of the office or whatever space they reside.

Tabitha shares that she is honoring God and respecting how he created her when she is being her authentic self.

“Showing up as anybody other than me is saying He didn’t do a good enough job,” said Tabitha. “But, when I show up as Tab, who he created, I’m honoring him [by] saying, “I appreciate you. I’m who you made me to be.”

The internet mom also addressed code switching in May on “Recipe For Change: Amplifying Black Women.”

“I understand that my grandparents and great-grandparents did that out of survival. I no longer have to do that — But I spent over 20 years covering my accent…Trying to fit in because that also meant me being me wasn’t enough.”

Cousins, at this point in your life are you free of code switching or has it become a natural thing?
