The HBO original series Euphoria has been the talk of the town since the day its first episode dropped. Whether they can relate or not, each week fans tap in on social media to dish about the lives and times of the show’s main characters.
Though the series has successfully built a core an exceedingly growing audience within its first two seasons, the folks of D.A.R.E are not amongst them as they’ve recently called out the showruunner on claims of glamorizing drug abuse!
A representative for the Drug-Abuse-Resistance-Education program tells the folks of TMZ that, “Rather than further each parent’s desire to keep their children safe from the potentially horrific consequences of drug abuse and other high-risk behavior, HBO’s television drama, Euphoria, chooses to misguidedly glorify and erroneously depict high school student drug use, addiction, anonymous sex, violence, and other destructive behaviors as common and widespread in today’s world.”
Euphoria tells the story of a group of high school students struggle to find their own identity while dealing with trauma, social media, intense everyday life and drugs.
Zendaya portrays the main character of Rue , a teenager who has been struggling with mental health for much of her life and uses drugs to help her cope with her own sense of reality.
The series executives have previously responded to criticism in saying that their approach is honest to today’s climate.
“It is unfortunate that HBO, social media, television program reviewers, and paid advertising have chosen to refer to the show as ‘groundbreaking,’ rather than recognizing the potential negative consequences on school-age children who today face unparalleled risks and mental health challenges,”reads a statement from D.A.R.E.
However they are also wagering a partnership with HBO to help rectify a more positive message. “We would welcome the opportunity for our team, including members of our high school-aged Youth Advocacy Board, to meet with individuals at HBO who are involved with producing Euphoria present our concerns directly.”
