Under proposed “Bentley’s Law” in Jefferson County, Missouri, named after a Grandmother’s surviving Grandson, will force drunk drivers to pony up the dough for children whose parents they kill until the age of 18 years old.
Grandmother Cecilia Williams lost her loved ones tragically, as the result of an allegedly drunk driver David Thurby. She lost her son, his fiancée and their 4month old child, reports CBS News.
“The car they were in was hit from behind, sending them off the road where they crashed and were killed.”
Williams is raising the two remaining children of the deceased couple; “Mason who is three years old and Bentley, a five year old whom the legislation is named after.
David Thurby had twice the legal limit of alcohol in his system, telling a trooper he had “seven shots of Crown and water,” according to court documents. He was charged with three counts of DWI.
Williams told the media “They deserve to get that compensation because you’re talking about raising children that their parents are no longer here.” She remains hard at work to help push Bentley’s Law through, and believes potential child support payments will act as a deterrent for drinking and driving. The payment would assist a “surviving spouse or other relatives who are raising the children of victims until the children turn 18.”
