Since being killed by the police in Minneapolis last year, George Floyd has influenced racial justice movements throughout the country!
Earlier this month, a statue honoring George Floyd in New York City’s Union Square Park was vandalized again, according to NBC KCRA. Around 10 a.m., a video showing an unidentified man on a skateboard throws paint at the statue before fleeing. Nearby statues such as Breona Taylor of Kentucky, who was killed by the police within her home last year, and the late congressman John Lewis were untouched.
As of Monday evening Micah Beals, 37 was arrested for the October 3rd incident, after being seen on camera wearing a beanie and headphones as he splashed a cup of white paint on the statue, reports the Daily News.
Now, this is not the first time vandalism has occurred to the statue memorializing Floyd. During the Juneteenth holiday, on Flatbush Ave, in Brooklyn, it was vandalized five days later after being unveiled. The statue was defaced with black paint and allegedly a logo of a white supremacist group. Members who installed the statue cleaned it up and Floyd’s brother along with residents, gathered while it was being prepared to move to Union Square in Manhattan
In an interview with CNN New Day, Floyd’s brother Philonise Floyd calls the act “Disgusting and downright wrong.” Honestly, we don’t see the point of vandalizing the statue because what purpose does it make? As Philonise Floyd describes it, “We live in a world where they use brutal force against black-defenseless people, and yet they’re using brutal force against black statues.”
Micah has been charged with criminal mischief.
