A three-judge panel has recently ordered to block the voter identification law citing discrimination against black voters!
It appears the North Carolina state panel is placing its foot down on the voter identification law, citing that the law discriminates against Black voters.
According to CNN, SB 824 passed in 2018 after the Republicans lost their supermajority in the legislature. The law was already on hold under a preliminary injunction after the North Carolina Court of Appeals said that this provision could negatively impact black voters. But as recently, the state court has completely blocked SB 824, which required photo identification to vote.
The majority of the three-judge panel said the law “was motivated at least in part by an unconstitutional intent to target African American voters.” However, the GOP in North Carolina feels the complete opposite by calling the ruling “partisan” and doubles down on the claim that SB 824 intended to promote election security. North Carolina Sen. Paul Newton said in a statement, “For all their talk about a secure democracy, the left, with an able assist from the judiciary, is doing their best to undermine it. Today, a partisan court blocked the will of a majority of North Carolinians who amended their Constitution to require photo voter ID.”
Despite this being a huge victory for voting rights, Republicans are vowing to appeal the decision. The general counsel for North Carolina House Speaker Tim More, Sam Hayes, said, “This fight is far from over,” after the ruling.
