The 2021 MTV Video Music Awards (VMA’s) took place Saturday night. It was a big celebration for the artists and the fans. Most importantly, it was a big night for Black artists and creatives who were on full display. From the time the show opened until the very end, Black artists completely stole the show.

In addition to winning Best Collaboration with Sza for “Kiss Me More,” Doja Cat was also the host for the evening and performer. Throughout the award show, the singer wore edgy artistic designer outfits and showcased her dorky humor. However it was Doja’s gravity-defying performance that was iconic. Performing “Been Like This,” while hovering over the audience, Doja slowly comes down to the center stage to perform her single “You Right.”

Not to mention it was also another big night for Normani and Chloe Bailey. Each artist performed a rendition of their current trending singles. Since releasing “Have Mercy” on Friday, Chloe showcased not only fierce dance moves but skin and body for days.

On the other hand, Normani was sensual while performing “Wild Side” with a special treat at the end– a guest appearance from Teyanna Taylor while referencing Janet Jackson’s classic “Would You Mind” performances. A signature lap dance Jackson would do with fans at every concert.

Despite not performing, Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak (Silk Sonic) won Best R&B for “Leave the Door Open” and Justin Bieber won Best Pop for “Peaches” featuring Daniel Caesar and Giveon.

Although R&B was doing its thing last night, let us not forget about Hip-Hop! Houston’s own Travis Scott won Best Hip-Hop for “Franchise” featuring Future and Young Thug.

But yet it was Busta Rhymes who gave such a memorable performance over seven minutes long. Introduced by Swizz Beatz, the Brooklyn rapper performed his massive hits such as “Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Could See,” “Scenario,” “Touch It,” and many others. Having Spliff Star by his side, the duo had the crowd hype and energized.

Lil Nas X has always brought the heat on and off the stage. The “Old Town Road” rapper did just that when he performed his latest hit “Industry Baby” with Kentucky rapper Jack Harlow. Lil Nas X opens up his performance with a band. Then transitions into “Montero State Prison” in bedazzled boxers and a steamy shower scene. Not only was Lil Nas X performance a sight to see, but he also took home one of the VMA’s prized categories: Video Of The Year for “Montero (Call Me By Your Name).

As you can see, The VMA’s was a great night for black artists and current emerging black pop artists.
