Congratulations are in order for film creator Nia DaCosta following the prequel release of cult classic horror movie #CandyMan , this weekend she made history becoming the first Black woman to debut a NO. 1 movie at the domestic box office!
According to Deadline ,Candyman ranks as the second-highest grossing 3-day domestic weekend box office opening for a Black female director; the record is owned by Ava DuVernay for her Disney movie A Wrinkle In Time which debuted in the No. 2
It’s been nearly thirty years since the film’s 1992 debut . Candyman 2021 pulled in over $22 million during its first weekend in theatres. Reports read that the film brought in $22, 270,000 from a total of 3,569 theaters.
“I was a fan of the film since I was a kid, it was always part of the atmosphere growing up,” says director and co-writer Nia to Yahoo.
Candyman doesn’t just serve as a horror movie its also about awakening society with an in-depth conversation about race. Nia alongside Jordan Peele created the film, who has made a name for himself in the industry for creating content that reflects on the direct climate of society through race.
“To be able to be part of that in a really direct way was really, really exciting, and fun, even though it was about really, really heavy stuff.”
