In efforts of helping to assist the U.S. territory of Puerto Rico fight against Covid-19, it has recently been announced that the country is set to receive nearly $4 billion dollars in federal education pandemic relief funds!
The announcement was made following U.S. Education Secretary Miguel Cardona’s trip to Puerto Rico Monday, marking the first for a Biden-Harris administration cabinet member; reports NBC News.
Sources have confirmed that half of the funding derived from the American Rescue Plan Act.
Reports read that dozens of schools were allowed to reopen in March 2021 for the very first time since the pandemic. Only students enrolled in Kindergarten, first, second, third and 12th grade including special education were able to attend.
However they were forced to close down again following a covid case spike.
“The students of Puerto Rico have suffered enough,” said Cardona. “It’s time to get back to school safely and quickly.”
It has been indicated that thousands of teachers and students have experienced power outages and loss of internet connection upon virtual learning.
More than 24,000 students failed their classes and 13,000 received an F within their overall courses leading to the Department of Education to launch mandatory summer school with the help of $210 million in approved funds.
