A memorial in honor of house representative, civil rights icon John Lewis is set to replace the Confederate monument in Georgia!

The announcement was made on Friday by the DeKalb County Board of Commissioners nearly six months after a judge directly ordered the removal of the monument that previously honored Confederate soldiers, reports Blavity.

“The area that once held the obelisk monument is unique as it sits wholly, both in the Congressional District Mr. Lewis represented for over 33 years and in DeKalb County, Georgia, and in the City of Decatur, the county seat,” reads the resolution.

Sources have confirmed that DeKalb County demonstrators contributed to the requested removal of countless controversial monuments around the world.

They also established the John Lewis Commemorative Task force in August 2020 advocating for the replacement of the Confederate monument with Lewis that passed in July.
