Child star and beloved actress #JurneeSmollett has been within the entertainment industry for well over 20 years. With numerous projects under her belt ranging from television to film, Jurnee has experienced pretty much everything an actress goes through in Hollywood both good and bad!
In a recent interview with the Hollywood Reporter to promote her role within the highly anticipated HBO series Lovecraft ; Jurnee spoke candidly about the multitude of issues she often faced as a Black female actress and the repeated instances of over sexualization and harassment she underwent.
Jurnee states, “I don’t know that I can confidently say that I worked on one job prior to Lovecraft—from the time I was 12 on—where I hadn’t been sexually harassed, whether it was by an [assistant director], a co-star, director, producer…”
According to Complex, Jurnee revealed that sexual harassment was something she endured very often and that she wasn’t afraid of speaking up about it.
“Like, a guy saying before we’re about to do this love scene, ‘Hey, your tits are going to be hanging in the wind,’ is not OK.”
Jurnee revealed that she has even walked away from a project in the past because of the exhibited behavior made her terribly uncomfortable. She asked to be released from her contract at that point “And they let me out.”
Jurnee states that within this point of her career she doesn’t hesitate to speak clearly on what she will not stand for.
“And I don’t apologize,” she said. “I’ll be like, ‘Listen, this fake-ass sexual harassment meeting that we’re having, I’m going to raise my hand now and let you guys know that the standards that they’re setting are bare minimum.’
