Legendary media Mogul #OprahWinfrey has caught quite the social media beat down since announcing she would be involved in the production of the #MeToo documentary Because of Russell Simmons. As of recently Winfrey has announced that she has decide to step away from the documentary; which unintentionally caused further speculation!
According to Essence Magazine; Winfrey recently appeared on CBS morning show to address rumors surrounding the Russell Simmons documentary.
“It was a hard decision because I knew that Russell Simmons had started publicly pressuring me [on social media] and that me pulling out of the documentary was going to look like I was being pressured,” states Winfrey.
Sources have confirmed that the documentary pertains to a variant of stories from victims of alleged sexual harassment and misconduct at the hands of music mogul Russell Simmons.
It has been indicated by social media users that Winfrey was supposedly pressured by members of Simmons camp to drop all affiliation with the documentary.
Winfrey states,“this is not a victory for Russell, and I unequivocally say that I did not pull out because of Russell. This is not a victory lap for him. I cannot be silenced by Russell Simmons after all I’ve been through.”
Winfrey continues, “I believe the women’s voices deserve to be heard. As an executive producer, I was also in a position where I think things were not right. I wanted the context of the story to be broadened, I wanted more women to be brought in.”
Upon the initial allegations, Simmons has since come forward to state in an Instagram post, “I have taken and passed nine 3-hour lie detector tests. These stories are UNUSABLE.”
Winfrey confirms that though she has walked away from the documentary she does offer her full support towards it.
