Are we wrong for feeling that every time a child dies at the hands of suicide, we as a society have directly failed them? It is with an extremely heavy heart that we inform you guys of the suicidal death of an Alabama teenage boy who was picked on by his peers because he was gay.
According to #EbonyMagazine ; #NigelShelby , 15 of Huntsville High school commutes suicide on April. 19th after enduring daily bullying antics from students due to his sexual orientation. “We were saddened to learn this morning of the death of Nigel Shelby, one of our 9th grade students,” states Aaron King, the principal of Shelby’s school, in a forwarded statement. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the family during this difficult time.”
Sources have indicated that local LGBT organization Rocket City Pride spoke out upon the death of Shelby at an Easter Drag Brunch. “I remember being called terrible words even when I was in elementary school before I knew what they meant,” states Celia Malone. “These bullies have to be held accountable, and until our state legislation shows that they have to do that, they’re able to run a muck and do whatever they want.”
A #GoFundMe page has been created to assist Shelby’s mother with funeral expenses. It has been indicated that the account has reached over its goal of $10,000 on Monday. A vigil also took place on Sunday to remember young Shelby.
