Dr. Gladys West, a pioneering mathematician whose calculations played a critical role in the development of modern GPS technology, has passed away at the age of 95.
According to reports from Richmond 6 News, Dr. West passed away over the weekend surrounded by loved ones.
During her career at the U.S. Naval Surface Warfare Center, Dr. West developed advanced mathematical models that accurately measured the shape of the Earth. Her work in data analysis and computer programming significantly improved satellite precision, helping form the foundation of satellite navigation systems used globally today.
In a 2022 reflection, her biographer Marvin Jackson described her as “a woman with extraordinary knowledge and a beautiful spirit.”
Dr. West’s contributions remain a lasting part of scientific innovation, with her work continuing to guide technology relied upon by millions worldwide.
