Love is growing — literally! 💛
Actors KJ Smith and Skyh Black shared the heartwarming announcement that they’re officially expecting their first child together!
The power couple, known for stealing hearts both on-screen and off, revealed the big news in a glowing photoshoot and exclusive interview with Essence. Fans who have followed their journey from Tyler Perry’s Sistas to their fairytale 2023 wedding are now celebrating this next, beautiful chapter — parenthood.
💬 “This would be a good experience with you.”
In an intimate moment of transparency, KJ shared that motherhood wasn’t always in her plans. But love changes things — and Skyh Black made her feel safe enough to imagine life as a mom. After facing health challenges like PCOS and fibroids, KJ opened up about how their baby is truly a blessing.
Just when the couple was preparing to start IVF in January, they were shocked to find out they’d conceived naturally — a moment KJ calls “divine.”
“I didn’t want kids at all. I aspired to be a rich auntie. I did not meet my husband until well into my 30s, so I had already decided,” KJ told Essence. “And then when he came into my life, and you meet a man who is responsible and a leader who takes charge and wants to be a father, wants to have a family, my mind changed as we grew and as we became a couple and married. He [Black] was the main reason I wanted a child. I said, ‘This would be a good experience with you as my partner and husband.’ So I didn’t anticipate having kids at all, and now I want as many as I can have.”
🤎 A Father’s Redemption
For Skyh, this is more than a life milestone — it’s a chance to become the father he never had. The All The Queen’s Men star shared that he’s been affirming the baby every day, already speaking life into their future.
“He tells the baby good morning every morning and says, ‘You’re amazing. You’re beautiful.’ He gives the baby positive affirmation. So it’s a sweet little morning ritual we all have,” said KJ..
🌿 Pregnancy + Mental Health
KJ also spoke candidly about going through prenatal depression in her first trimester, but says prayer, community, and her husband’s love pulled her through.
“I was crying myself to sleep, because I was just like, ‘What is going on?’ I don’t even understand this,” said KJ. “And it was very confusing for someone who has tried to maintain control of their life, to lose control of my body and my mind. It was terrifying, and I had to lean heavily on my faith because I had to relinquish control and surrender to God. I said to him, ‘You know what you’re doing. You know you’ve never led me astray before.’ I am so incredibly blessed, and my husband was there with me every step of the way, when I’m crying in the sink, or when I’m on the toilet.”
Now at five months, the couple is focused on staying grounded, skipping the big baby shower and opting for real support from their village.
