Illinois Supreme Court Rules To Reverse Jussie Smollett’s Conviction!

Noir Nation! It has been a long and complicated road traveled for actor Jussie Smollett however he can finally put it all behind him now as an Illinois Supreme Court has officially ruled to overturn charges surrounding his 2019 hoax!

According to CNN, the Illinois Supreme Court has decided to overturn the previous conviction on allegations that Jussie set up a racist and homophobic attack against himself in downtown Chicago in 2019 and lied to police.

Sources state that the court’s decision came after Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx dropped charges against Jussie, ruling that a federal prosecutor should not have been allowed to intervene in the case.

“We are aware that this case has generated significant public interest and that many people were dissatisfied with the resolution of the original case and believed it to be unjust,” reads a written statement fromJustice Elizabeth M. Rochford.

The court’s final decision was 5-0 , with two justices abstaining.

“Today we resolve a question about the State’s responsibility to honor the agreements it makes with defendants,” reads a statement from the Illinois Supreme Court earlier today.

“Specifically, we address whether the dismissal of a case by nolle prosequi allows the State to bring a second prosecution when the dismissal was entered as part of an agreement with the defendant and the defendant has performed his part of the bargain.”

“We hold that a second prosecution under these circumstances is a due process violation, and we therefore reverse the defendant’s conviction.”
