Boar’s Head Deli Company Hit With Lawsuit Following Deadly Listeria Outbreak!

Cousins, the popular deli meat and cheese company Boar’s Head is currently facing a potential lawsuit due to accusations of misleading their consumers following a Listeria outbreak!

USA Today news reports, a total of seven million pounds of Boar’s Head products were recalled as a result of the disease-causing bacteria. A class action lawsuit was filed within the United States District Court for the Eastern District of New York on Thursday, August 1st.

The suit issues claims that Boar’s Head Provisions, Co. Inc. “improperly, deceptively and misleadingly labeled and marketed its products, by failing the full extent of possible contamination by Listeria monocytogenes.”

The identified plaintiff, Rita Torres has stated that she had purchased one of the recalled products and would have decided against it if the company had taken the proper precautions to warn customers of the possible bacterial contamination.

Sources state the recalled products were linked to a listeria outbreak reported by the U.S. Center for Disease Control. As of July 25, 34 people had fallen ill in 13 states, along with 33 hospitalizations and two fatalities.

In response Boar’s Head further expanded the recall on July 30 to include over 7 million pounds of ready-to-eat meat and poultry products, QThe recall covered 71 additional items produced between May 10, 2024 and July 29, 2024.

Listeriosis, or listeria poisoning, is classified as a foodborne bacterial infection commonly triggered by the bacterium Listeria monocytogenes.

Listeria is described as life threatening and dangerous as it weaken immune systems in older people as well as pregnant women.

According to the USDA, some of the symptoms of Listeriosis or listeria poisoning consist of:

  • Fever
  • Muscle aches
  • Headache
  • Stiff neck
  • Confusion
  • Loss of balance
  • Convulsions
  • Diarrhea
  • Other gastrointestinal symptoms
  • Miscarriage, stillbirth, premature delivery and/or life-threatening infection of newborn infants
  • Death
