In a post to Instagram, our forever First Lady confirmed that her mother passed away on Friday, May 31st, “She passed peacefully this morning, and right now, none of us are quite sure how exactly we’ll move on without her.”
“My mom Marian Robinson was my rock, always there for whatever I needed. She was the same steady backstop for our entire family, and we are heartbroken to share she passed away today.”
Marian is said to have been a Chicago native and to the executive mansion in 2009 to help care for granddaughters Malia and Sasha when Barack Obama took office, reports AP news.
“There were many good and valid reasons that Michelle raised with me, not the least of which was the opportunity to continue spending time with my granddaughters, Malia and Sasha, and to assist in giving them a sense of normalcy that is a priority for both of their parents, as has been from the time Barack began his political career,” wrote Marian as she detailed how she was originally hesitant to move from Chicago to Washington.
“My feeling, however, was that I could visit periodically without actually moving in and still be there for the girls.”
Michell shared a message on Twitter (X) days after her mother’s passing to extend a sincere thank you for the outpouring of support her family has received.
“I just wanted to say thank you for all the prayers, kind words, and love that you all have shown our entire family these last few days,” Michelle wrote. “Every text, comment on social media, and beautiful tribute has brought us some light. It means so much to hear what a special woman she was to you all, as well. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you.”
