Cousins! Tamar Braxton unknowingly kicked off a battle of the voices debate online after sharing her personal preference involving two of the most legendary singers to ever grace the earth!
The conversation across social media began after a video clip dating back to 2022 resurfaced. Tamar had appeared in a live tapping of the “State of Black Music” podcast alongside hosts Phil Thornton, Claude Kelly, Chuck Harmony, and Tamone Bacon at the National Museum of African American Music, reports Atlanta Black Star.
The interview wrapped up with a game of ‘This or That’ as Tamar was asked questions regarding a string of artists and was instructed to choose between the two. Questions such as Brandy, Monica, Xscape, or Destiny’s Child were asked as well as her choice between Mariah Carey or Whitney Houston.
“I’ve never been a huge Whitney fan like that,” explained Tamar while also giving Whitney her respected flowers.
“I don’t want you guys to take it out of context here. I’m not saying that I don’t like her music. I’m not saying that she wasn’t a phenomenal singer.
Tamar added, “I’m not saying her songs wasn’t amazing. But for me, because you asked me a personal question, my personal preference will always be Mariah Carey,” she continued.
As the resurfaced video clip began to pick up views, social media users chimed in.
“There is no Whitney or Mariah there’s no Whitney or nothing. Now there can be a Whitney and Mariah. Or just Whitney,” wrote a Twitter X user.
“Truth is Mariah catalog is more diverse than Whitney even though I think Whitney is a better overall live performer. They both are GOOD…in different ways. But without Whitney there would had been no Mariah,” wrote another user.
“Whitney is THE BLUEPRINT and you can’t sit on them people stage and try to convince me that you like Mariah over her,” argued a social media user.
“i need y’all to understand that whitney only had two albums out when mariah came out lol they are peers in every sense of the word. whitney is legendary of course but to pretend that mariah doesn’t exist without whitney is dishonest lol”
Social media users also attempted to drag Tamar for her comments while accusing her of choosing Whitney over Mariah as an act. However, it wasn’t long before a fan tweeted a dated video clip combined with interviews where Tamar named Mariah as one of her favorite singers ever.
“Tamar is consistent …leave her alone 🗣️,” reads the tweet.
“But it’s shade coming from me… always to everyone 🥱,”Tamar responded while re-sharing the post.
