Cousins! A man hasmade major headlines Friday afternoon after setting himself a blaze near a courthouse in New York City where former President Donald Trump awaited trial!
According to ABC News, the incident occurred around 1:30 PM in the lower downtown area of Manhattan as the jury selection process wrapped up. Authorities have identified the man as 37-year-old Max Azzarello from St. Augustine, Florida.
A witness tells police officers that Max walked into Collect Pond Park and began tossing paper pamphlets into the air. He then apparently drenched his entire body in gasoline, which was later confirmed to be an alcohol-based cleaning solution.
“He got himself soaking wet and then pulled out a lighter,” the witness recalled. “It reminded me of what happened in the Vietnam War. I’ve seen videos of those things.”
Responding officers are said to have run over to Max and immediately stepped in to assist as a detective attempted to stop the flames with his coat.
A fire extinguisher was later used and Max was rushed to a New York Presbyterian/ Weill Cornell Medical Center hospital. He is currently listed in critical condition.
Numerous officers have also sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
Authorities state that the pamphlets used belonged to scriptures of conspiracy theories. One of the pages from the stack of papers had a heading that read, “I have set myself on fire outside the Trump Trial.”
Max described himself as being an “investigative researcher” and also broke down in over 2,600 a description of why he setting himself on fire.
Officials confirm that he acted alone.
“We’re very concerned,” Chief of Department Jeffrey Maddrey said. He says that the NYPD will continue to investigate.
