Cousins! A school bus driver in New Orleans’ quick thinking and motherly instincts helped her to save the lives of multiple students just minutes before a bus they were on became covered in flames!
The incident occurred earlier this month on March 13th as Kia Rousseve of Louisiana was traveling with a busload of students ranging from kindergarten through eighth grade. She was en route to her fifth stop when she began to notice something was wrong.
“I put my motherhood on. I have a child, so I thought about them kids like it was my own child,” said Kia to Good Morning America.
The Community Academies of New Orleans employee adds that she knew things were escalating when the school bus began to lose power.
“The bus started acting crazy and started jerking and going real, real slow,” said Kia.
Sources state that the entire ordeal was caught on a nearby security camera. Kia can be seen pulling over with an observer letting her know that flames were coming from underneath the school bus.
Kia quickly gathered the young students and led them off the school bus and away from the vehicle.
“I just had to stay calm for the kids because there was crying and running up the street, and I had to get them together, you know, make sure they were straight,”said the 28 year old woman.
Moments later the bus can be seen completely covered in flames.
Community Academies of New Orleans, have described Kia’s fast thinking and call to action “courage on wheels.”
“We could have lost our lives. That’s what I’ve been thinking a lot,” Kia said. “Every time I look at the pictures and like, wow, my seat was the first thing that caught on fire.”
“I was just glad that I was being a hero to the kids and being a hero to myself by getting them off the bus.”
