Cousins! Actress and comedian Amanda Seales took social media by storm following a venting session where she expressed not feeling recognized within Black spaces in the entertainment industry!
Following this year’s Naacp Image Awards, Amanda shared her frustration with fans that she feels excluded from events and welcoming spaces that highlight Black entertainers. Amanda says that she hasn’t been invited to Essence’s Black Women In Hollywood annual awards, the Naacp Image Awards, and more.
“If it wasn’t for y’all, I would really think that I ain’t doing sh*t. Because the industry I’m in does not recognize me,” she explained. “To be clear I’m speaking about the Black spaces in the industry I’m in…which is largely in part why I realized I need to shift out of this industry…”
“I don’t get invited to Essence Women in Hollywood. I’ve NEVER been invited to the NAACP Image awards. I’ve been nominated for an Image award, never been invited.”
Amanda continued, “Never been honored at Black Girls Rock…I literally hosted the BET Awards in 2020 in my house and I was not invited to the BET Awards since.”
“So I just want to thank y’all for always reminding me that I really am valuable because the game and the industry that I’ve been in has never let me know.”
The former Insecure star’s comments was met with major scrutiny online as social media users began to weigh in.
“Amanda Seales has a history of people not wanting her around. I used to hate that for her.. especially in the “Insecure” days. I always wanted to see more of her, but she has to work on her ENERGY. It becomes telling when people don’t want to be around you,” wrote one user.
“She doesn’t play “the game” and it makes a lot of people uncomfortable. It’s a double edge sword. Do you be fake and make it a mission for people to like you and play popularity politics or do you speak up , speak from your heart and sacrifice your ability to eat? She got that Chris Brown, Kanye, 2Pac thing going on, but she is a black woman so it’s not received the same way , so we are here.”
“Her energy is trash look at how she be talking she need to work on that heavy vibes she have maybe then they take her seriously,” wrote another social media user.
Amanda also proceeded to call out Black media outlets that have seemingly suggested that the circulated belief of her being “unlikeable” is the reason she has been snubbed by Black Hollywood.
