Former Target employee Bazn Bethe was sentenced to 100 years following the 2021 death of Hernan Leiva. With a 30-year suspension, the 25-year-old is expected to serve at least 79 years in prison, reports the New York Post.

Bazn told authorities that he was upset and that he purchased a hammer along with two knives on April 15th, 2021 after completing his shift at Target. He is said to have planned his attack days after his food was allegedly stolen from the office’s fridge. Bazn told officials that he had spent days training for murder.

On the morning of April 17th, 2021 Bazn shared that he stayed within the parking lot area of Target in Bailey’s Crossroads to wait for Hernan to arrive at work. Court documents detail that Bazn attacked Hernan, saddly stabbing and bludgeoning him to deah. He ultimately fled the scene and was later arrested.

Following his confession Bazn pleaded guilty to first-degree murder in October 2023.

While appearing in court Bazn threatened that if he was not given the harshest sentence possible he would kill or hurt other people.

“Mr. Leiva’s unnecessary and tragic death leaves behind a grieving family and community, one that will never be the same after such a senseless act of violence,” said Commonwealth’s Attorney Steve Descano in court.

“In this case, because of the unique and self-proclaimed danger the defendant continues to pose to the community, today’s sentence was a necessary outcome for maintaining public safety.”

“He was an exemplary figure and beacon of light in your moment of darkness,” wrote Hernan’s son Jesse Leiva in a GoFundMe campaign.
