The ‘Color Purple’ Pulls In $18M; Making Largest Christmas Day Opening!

Cousins, congratulations are in order for the cast and crew of the Color Purple following reports that they’ve successfully pulled in $18M in box office sales in 3,152 North American theaters!

According to CNN, the musical film made the largest Christmas day debut in the last 14 years. It has been stated that the ‘Color Purple’ claims the NO.1 spot for the biggest Christmas Day debut which was previously held by 2009’s Sherlock Holmes.

The Color Purple, in its opening day, exceeded the entire opening weekends of every stage-to-screen musical adaptation that’s premiered in the last few years, including In the Heights ($11 million), West Side Story ($10.5 million), aDear Evan Hansen ($7.5 million), and Cats ($6.6 million),” reports NPR.

“I had never done a film, been in a film, knew anything about filming but wanted to be in The Color Purple more than anything in my life,” said Oprah Winfrey while appearing on the Drew Barrymore show.

‘The Color Purple’ stars Fantasia Barrino, Taraji P. Henson, Halle Bailey, Elizabeth Marvel, Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, Danielle Brooks, H.E.R, Coleman Domingo, Corey Hawkins, Louis Gossett Jr., David Alan Grier and more. The screenplay was written by Marcus Gardley, Alice Walker, and Marsha Norman.

According to Deadline, The Color Purple (2023) was produced by Steven Spielberg, Oprah Winfrey, Scott Sanders and Quincy Jones alongside executive producers Alice Walker, and Rebecca Walker.
