Cousins! Jada Pinkett-Smith is opening up about how the 2022 Oscars award slap between Will Smith and Chris Rock served as a turning point in her marriage!
Appearing in a one-on-one sit-down at the Perelman Performing Arts Center in New York City on Monday night, Jada spoke candidly about the viral ordeal. She recalled how the incident drove both herself and Will in the direction of completing the necessary work needed to heal themselves.
“And now we’re in this beautiful place—-he’s been on his journey too,” Jada explains.
“It’s not just me. I’m not the only one who had to do work,” she said jokingly.
As we previously reported, Will slapped Chris on stage during last year’s ceremony following a joke about Jada’s shaved head.
“When I was sitting at the Oscars, it clicked in. As soon as I was like, ‘Oh snap, you hit Chris?’” said Jada. “I was like, I’m riding with you. I didn’t come into this place as your wife, but I’m leaving here as your wife because we got a storm we’re going to have to deal with together. I am not gonna leave your side.”
Jada expressed within the live discussion that one of the lessons she’s learned within her own life is that she is responsible for making herself happy. She expressed that anything outside of her should be an addition to her already secured happiness.
“Whatever someone offers me is a gift and that I’m not entitled. And I had to really learn that about Will. I wasn’t entitled to him.”
