Cousins! It is with an extremely heavy heart that we inform you all that beloved music producer Clarence Avant also known as the ‘Black Godfather,’ has passed away at 92 years old!
According to a statement released on behalf of his children Nicole and Alexander alongside his son-in-law Ted Sarandos, the iconic businessman is said to have transitioned in his Los Angeles located home on Sunday.
Clarence kickstarted his career within a New Jersey lounge in the 1950s where he worked as a manager. It has been stated that he was mentored early on by Louis Armstrong’s music manger Joseph Glaser.
“It is with a heavy heart that the Avant/Sarandos family announce the passing of Clarence Alexander Avant,” Avant’s children Nicole and Alex and son-in-law Ted Sarandos said in a statement.
“Through his revolutionary business leadership, Clarence became affectionately known as ‘The Black Godfather’ in the worlds of music, entertainment, politics, and sports.”
“Clarence leaves behind a loving family and a sea of friends and associates that have changed the world and will continue to change the world for generations to come. The joy of his legacy eases the sorrow of our loss.”
Clarence’s daughter Avant wrote, “One of my favorite Clarence-isms goes like this: ‘It is what it is, now what are you going to do about it?’ Today I’m choosing to honor and celebrate your incredible life and the legacy you’ve left behind.”

Clarence is said to have founded two record labels towards the beginning of his career, Venture Records in 1967 and Sussex records in 1969.
The musical pioneer has achieved much success within the musical industry as he was named the chairman of the board of Motown and was also inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2021. Clarence has been honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame along with an Industry Icon Award at the 2019 Grammys.
News of Clarence’s death comes nearly two years after his wife Jacqueline Avant within an attempted burglary at their home in 2021, per TMZ.
