Cousins! Following the recent sentencing of Tory Lanez in which he received ten years in prison for the 2020 shooting of Megan Thee Stallion, letters of support on behalf of the Canadian rapper from fellow celebrities have been released to the public.
Earlier this week Legal Affairs reporter Meghann Cunnif revealed on Twitter that Iggy Azalea was one of over fifty people to forward written support of Tory ahead of his official sentencing.
Meghann has provided an in-depth play-by-play of the entire trial from the very beginning. On Thursday, August 10th, she also shared an uploaded image of singer Mario’s letter to Judge David Herriford. “My name is Mario Berrett, and I am a recording artist and businessman. I am good friends with Tory Lanez and have known Tory for over seven years,” he wrote.
Throughout the letter, Mario emphasized his friendship with Tory and how he admired the person he is as both a father and a man of his community.
“One of the things I love about Tory the most is how deeply he cares about his family… Growing up without a father, I admired that he was fortunate enough to grow up with his. Those conversations revealed how much of a standup person Tory is.”
Further within the letter, Mario continued to mention Tory giving back to his community and how much he valued Tory’s relationship with his son. “I can only hope that Tory will be able to be there for his son during the most formative years of his life.”
The 36-year-old concluded in saying that it was , “a surprise to so many of us who know Tory personally” and that he has never seen Tory “act out of character in a manner to hurt someone.” He then brought the letter to a close by saying, “All I can ask and pray for is that he and his son are treated fairly.”
The two have been friends for over five years and have previously collaborated in the past. According to Vibe Magazine, Mario appeared on Tory’s Chixtape 5 project in 2019 with the song “The Cry.” In 2022 Mario’s single “Main One” featuring Tory received negative feedback online for the feature. The original version was later taken down, and replaced with a new edition featuring a collaboration with Tyga and Lil Wayne.
Iggy is rumored to have previously been in a romantic relationship with Tory prior to his incarceration.
“I deeply appreciate the person he is and have never witnessed him loose his temper or raise his voice at a woman. He’s always been incredibly respectful of me and I refuse to believe that he would do anything in malice especially to a woman,” Iggy wrote.
After her letter of support was met with much backlash throughout Twitter, Iggy issued a lengthy since-deleted tweet in response.
“For the record: 1. I have not been in touch with tory for months, I have no reason to be, but I do wish him well. 2. I don’t ‘support’ anyone. the whole thing is full of oddities. My letter never mentioned anything in regard to what happened that night.”
