Issa Rae Expresses She Was Hesitant About Her Show’s Title: Rap Sh!t

Insecure’s co-creator, co-writer, and star, Issa Rae, is back on the scene with the release of an all new show called Rap Sh!t

Rap Sh!t’ serves as a fresh and modern day  comedy series that  follows the story of two former high school friends from Miami, Florida named Shawna, and Mia, who reunite to form a rap group.

During an interview on “Late Night With Seth Meyers,” the Forbes ’30 Under 30′ achiever unveiled that the name was initially an issue due to its obscenity. Even though the plot line was set in stone, Rae was hesitant about the series title.

She explains,

“I did, yes. I anticipated that it was a tentative title, and then I talked to HBO legal, like what can we get away with, because we had an asterisk in the title and then we replaced it with an exclamation point, and they were like, ‘It’s totally fine.’ Like, TV Guide can print that.”

“And so then it was like, yes, it’s out there, but now it’s on billboards, and little kids are seeing it,”

Rae continues. “And sorry, parents. But they can read, which is great.”

Elsewhere in the discussion, Rae told the show’s host about Rap Sh! t’s inspiration,

“I am a huge rap fan, and this idea has kind of been gestating for a while. I’ve always wanted to have something set in the music world, and this is just such an exciting time. Like, there’s so many dope female rappers who are out here killing it.”

She continues,

“And one of my favorite producers, a male, happened to say that all women rap about now, is like, their vaginas. Like, it’s all the same, all the same. And I was like that’s not fair because men rap about the same thing all the time. And so that — that kind of double standard really interested me.”

Issa tells Deadline, “I’m really excited. You know, I wrote it during the last season of Insecure, and I wanted to create something that made me feel like female rap music feels to me. Something that felt fun, that really chronicled the music industry and this time as a creative right now.”

Cousins! Do you think Rap Sh!t depicts emerging artists’ elevation to a tee?
