“An appellate court found his trial attorney was ineffective. The Cook County state’s attorney’s office dropped the case rather than put Bolden on trial again and he was granted a certificate of innocence, allowing him to receive state payment for his time in prison,”explains Yahoo two years prior to his 2016 release.

Bolden sued the city. His lawyer Ron Safer claimed his innocence for the killings of 24-year-old Derrick Frazier and 23-year-old Irving Clayton. The police had no evidence and detectives ignored key evidence.

Safer told the media after the jurors served up a win in the amount of $25 million for his client, “I think the jury recognized that he was victimized by a system that unfortunately has victimized people for too long, and they want it to stop.”

The Chicago Tribune noted that this payment made to the now 51 year old man, is said to be the largest amount given out in a wrongful conviction case for the city of Chicago.
