Professor Alberto Friedmann at the University of Health and Sciences in Lombard, Illinois, is charged with a hate crime. After allegedly spitting on a Black Woman and using racial slurs to insult her and her 7-year-old daughter outside a grocery store, according to Blavity. 

The incident took place on Sep. 7, when the mother and daughter were parked in the parking lot waiting for a relative to finish grocery shopping in Oak Park, a small town just 10 miles from Chicago.

According to court documents, the woman was reportedly in the car when she heard Friedmann “honking and yelling” and using racial slurs while telling her to “move your f**king car.” 

Despite the woman telling Friedmann to drive around her, he continued to use racial slurs. In court documents, he allegedly approached the woman’s car.
Sources confirmed that, when she tried to exit her car, the then 53-year-old man pushed the door closed and spat in her face.

The woman’s mother said while leaving the store, she saw Friedmann yelling racial slurs and spitting on her daughter, court documents state. Then the 7-year-old mother pressed to get Friedmann’s license plate while yelling for someone to call the police. She then threw a water bottle at his car before officers arrived.

According to prosecutors, Friedmann “came inches” in striking the woman with his car when he drove his car towards her. Once placed in custody, Friedmann had “admissions of spitting” and striking her car. Also, reportedly he “doesn’t like Black people.”

After Friedmann appeared in court Sunday, he was released on $2,500 bail. Friedmann’s attorney, John McNamara, described his client as a minority himself and a “child of immigrants.” Also claiming his client did not use any racial language.
