Iconic poet and Civil Rights activist Dr. Maya Angelou has recently been named as one of the very first women to be featured on a quarter!

The news was announced on Monday afternoon by the U.S Mint apart of an initiative to honor history making American women within the American Women’s Quarters Program reports The Grio.

The legislation for the program was originally proposed by both senators Deb Fischer and Catherine Cortez Masto and officially passed in 2020.

Sources have confirmed that the late Maya Angelou will be featured within the very first set of new edition quarters to be issued in January 2022.

Reports read that Maya’s feature will consist of seven different designs. One will display Maya holding a cage in one hand and a black bird in another along with another portrait of her arms stretched out with a bird shaped back drop.

Both are in reference to her her legendary autobiography I Know Why the Caged Birds Sing, which made history as the very first nonfiction bestseller by a Black woman. 

“These past 100 years of suffrage would not have been possible without the work of so many courageous women, whose efforts paved the way for many more to make crucial contributions to the history of the United States,” Fischer and Cortez Masto stated to USA Today back in February.”
