Cousins!
A memorial dedicated to the life and legacy of baseball hall of famer Jackie Robinson has been left pierced with multiple bullet holes and is now included in the series of attacked Black historical landmarks in Georgia!
The tragic news was reported by the Georgia Historical Society ( GHS) on Tuesday reports Blavity.
The organization notes the incident took place within Grady County, Georgia and that the statue was hit two times on each side by apparent gunfire last week.
Georgia Historical Society board member, Erroll B. Davis, Jr. has stated, “I was distressed to learn about the desecration of the Jackie Robinson marker, just as I was saddened last summer when I learned about the repeated vandalism of the marker recognizing the lynching of Mary Turner.”
“Jackie Robinson was a pioneer in the integration of Major League Baseball and someone whose accomplishments should bring pride to all Americans. This is a shameful act of vandalism that unfortunately has been carried out against several other markers that commemorate Civil Rights figures, in Georgia and beyond.”
Though numerous instances have occurred involving direct vandalism of the Black historic landmarks, there has been no information forwarded on any arrests for the individuals responsible for the attacks.
